Tandem's Watch room is a private space for two: video chat, a synced player, and screen sharing, so you can watch something at the same time without both being in the same room, or the same country. One of you opens the room, the other joins, and you're both looking at the same thing at the same instant.
What's actually in the room
You see and hear each other the whole time through video chat, the same as any video call, but built to sit alongside whatever you're watching instead of taking over the screen. For YouTube, Tandem runs a synced player: press play on one side and it plays on both, pause and it pauses on both, so nobody is watching three seconds ahead of the other. You can also share your screen, a browser tab, so your partner sees exactly what's on it.
The Netflix answer, honestly
Here's the part most apps in this space either fudge or don't mention: sharing a browser tab carries the audio fine, but Netflix and other DRM-protected streaming services deliberately render a black picture to anyone receiving a screen share. That's the streaming service's own copy protection working as designed, not a limitation of the room, and not something any app can quietly work around without breaking the platform's rules. If a "watch Netflix together" tool claims otherwise, be skeptical of what it's actually doing.
YouTube and other non-DRM video work fully, synced picture and all. For everything else, including Netflix, the video chat and audio still carry, so you can watch on your own screens in your own timezone and talk through it exactly like you're on the couch together, you just won't see each other's exact picture for that one service.

Does it work with Netflix?
Partly, and we would rather be straight about it. You can share a browser tab and the audio carries, but Netflix and other DRM-protected services render a black picture to the other person. That is the streaming service's protection, not something an app can work around. YouTube and non-DRM video work fully.
