Tandem's letters render in cursive and don't show up the instant you hit send. Each one waits somewhere between one and three hours before it lands in your partner's inbox, a randomized delay that turns a letter back into something you wrote and then had to wait on, instead of one more message that arrives the second it's typed.
Why the delay is the whole point
Texting already exists, and it's instant, which is exactly why it doesn't feel like a letter. Tandem's one-to-three-hour delivery window is deliberate: you write it, you send it, and then there's a stretch of not knowing exactly when it'll land, closer to how mail actually used to feel than to another chat bubble. It's a small mechanic, but it's the one thing that makes a letter read differently than a text, even though both are just words on a screen.
What you can write
Letters are plain text, written and read inside your own private two-person space, no feed, nobody else can see them, ever. You can write one just to say something a text would flatten, a thank-you, an apology, a "thinking about you" that deserves more than a quick message.
Free plan and Pro
The free plan includes one letter per person per day, plenty for most couples to keep a steady rhythm going without it turning into a chat replacement. Pro removes that limit entirely and adds two things the free plan doesn't have: attachments on a letter, and the ability to schedule one to arrive on a specific future date, useful for an anniversary or a trip you know is coming.

Why the delay?
