Tandem

Games for long distance couples, played across timezones

Games for long distance couples work best when neither person has to be online at the same time. Tandem's five turn based games, Scrabble, Chess, Connect 4, Checkers, and Battleship, hold their exact position until the other person opens the app, so a twelve hour gap between New Jersey and Manila, or anywhere else, stops mattering. Quiz, Doodle, and Paint need both of you online at once. Scrabble is free; the other four turn-based games are part of Tandem Pro.

Why most couple games break over distance

Most mobile games built for two assume you are both looking at your phone at the same moment: a live match, a countdown timer, a lobby that expires if one person does not show up in time. That works fine across a room. Across timezones it means someone is always waiting up late, or one partner ends up playing solo against a bot because the other could not make the window. The fix is not a better connection. It is a different kind of game, one that does not need the clock to line up.

Plenty of people land here after searching phrases like games to play with girlfriend on phone or online games to play with girlfriend, looking for something that still works when you are not in the same city. Tandem does not care about the label on the relationship, boyfriend, girlfriend, spouse, or partner: the same turn-based games and the same distance-proof system apply either way.

The five games that survive a twelve-hour gap

These hold their position indefinitely. There is no lobby to expire and no clock either of you has to watch.

If you are searching for free online games for long distance couples, here is the honest version: of Tandem's two free games, only Scrabble makes this list. Paint needs both of you online, so a free-plan long-distance couple gets exactly one game that survives a real gap. That one game is a full 15x15 board with a real dictionary, not a stripped-down mobile version, and it holds up fine on its own for as long as you want to play it. The other four turn-based games above, Chess, Connect 4, Checkers, and Battleship, come with Tandem Pro.

The three that want you both awake

Paint (both modes), Quiz, and Doodle are the three exceptions. Paint's Compare mode times you both at 100 seconds each and Together puts you on one shared canvas with no timer, so either way it needs two people online before it starts. Quiz runs on a shared clock, ten questions, five seconds each, and reveals both scores together. Doodle looks turn based, one of you draws while the other guesses, but both partners have to ready up before a round starts and each turn runs on a timer that auto-advances if nobody answers, so it needs you both around too, just not necessarily drawing at the exact same second. Save these three for the hours your schedules actually overlap, and lean on the five turn-based games above the rest of the time.

Built by a couple in two timezones

I built Tandem because I live in New Jersey and my partner lives in Manila, a twelve hour difference most days. Real-time games did not work for us. By the time I was free in the evening she was already asleep, and a lobby timer just meant one of us lost by default before the other even opened the app. Turn based games solved the actual problem: I make my move with my coffee, she makes hers with hers, and neither of us has to schedule a call just to finish a game of Chess.

What happens when it is your turn

You get a push notification the moment your partner moves, whether that is a Scrabble word, a Chess move, or a finished Doodle round, so you do not have to keep checking the app yourself. If a game sits untouched for a while, Tandem sends a nudge so it does not quietly stall in someone's queue. Neither of you has to remember whose turn it is; the app remembers for both of you.

Common questions

What games work when you are twelve hours apart?

Turn-based ones. Scrabble, Chess, Connect 4, Checkers, and Battleship all hold their position until the other person opens the app, so neither of you has to stay up. Quiz, Doodle, and Paint need you both online at the same time.

Are any of them free?

Scrabble and Paint are free with no time limit. The other six are part of Pro. Of the two free games, only Scrabble survives a timezone gap; Paint needs you both online.

Is there anything to play at the same time?

Yes, three of the eight actually need it: Paint (both modes), Quiz, and Doodle. Quiz runs on a shared clock, Paint's Compare mode times you both at once and Together is a live shared canvas, and Doodle needs both partners readied up before each round.

Does it tell us when it is our turn?

Yes. You get a push notification when your partner moves, and a nudge if a game has been waiting a while.
